Half Hour Heroes

We invest in the schools by providing Half Hour Heroes–volunteers who are willing to give 1/2 hour a week to invest in the life of a child.

Lunch buddies: A lunch buddy meets with a middle school student for 1/2 hour a week over their lunch hour and provides encouragement and wisdom through casual conversation.  During the middle school years, kids are making decisions and building attitudes toward school and toward authority that will determine the direction of their lives. Providing mentors who can build a relationship and offer wisdom and a caring heart can help students see the possibilities of making wise choices, even when peers may be pulling them in other directions.

Reading buddies: A reading buddy meets with an elementary student 1/2 to an hour a week to help a child improve his/her reading ability.  Elementary school aged children are one of the most strategic groups to reach.  It is at the youngest ages that students need to learn skills and be encouraged so that they can discover success as they move into middle and high school.  If students don’t learn to read by third grade, then they may never catch up or move forward.  Being a Reading Buddy can change the course of a child’s educational experience and therefore his life.
